GISBORNE, Aug. 17. Flood damage and other costs involved by the inundation of May, • 1948, of a large portion of the Gisborne flats totalled almost half the estimated outlay on the catchment board's scheme to control future floods iri the Waipaoa River. This startling conclusion was revealed in the economic report submitted to the board by its engineer after a study of the effects of the flooding and the benefits to be derived from flood 'freedom on the flats. The cost of the river control scheme recehtly submitted to the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council is estimated at £667,000, Of which the council is expected to provide xhree-quarters by way of subsidy. ' The losses associated with the flood aggregated over £314,000. '
