United States Has Bad Polio Year
Received Tuesday, 7 p.m. NEW YO$K, August 1. The infantile paralysis epidemic that is sweeping the Uruted States, has resulted in at least 800(5 cases this year up to July 31. With August and Septemher — normally the months of heaviest incidence — still to come, it is feared 1949 may prove the worst poliomyelitis year in United States' history. A record was set in 1916 when about 30,000 cases were reported. The year 1948 was the second worst with 27,680. Insurance brokers have been swamped with applications for new low cost polio, insurance. Some towns have banned public meetings, including funerals. Others have forbidden seiw'ing drinks over bars and others have closed all heaciies.
