News Briefs From Borough Council's Meeting
In his second compiaint to the Levin Borough * Council regardihg an alleged nuisance brought about by escaping steam from.a laundry in Beach Road, a resident in the vicinity again asked the council at its meeting on Monday night that steps be taken to abate it. Moving that the complaint be disregarded by the council on the grounds of triviality, Cr. R. S. Antcliff said that both he and Cr. J. Miller had inves'.igated the matter and had requested -the proprietors Of the .aundry to put the steam on at full pressure. He eonsidered that the complainant had no grounds for regarding the steam as a nuisance, as it cou1d hardly be seen and there was no noise at all to be heard frcm the resident's fenceline. A motion that no action be taken was passed. * * * A donation of.£l ls was granted the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand, which wrote endosing a copy of its annual report and balance sheet. The Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin,. said that he thought the society was deserving of assistance and that ' recognition of bravery was warranted. A boy in the district had some time ago received an award from the society. * , -t- * A plan of subdivision in Bartholomew Road was submitted by a firm of soiicitors on be'half o.f Mr. T. G. Cheesman. It was referred to the works committee. * * * The New Zealand Library Association Oocal authorities' section) forwarded a copy of an agreement relating to the provision of sets of plays for reading groups and societies as a public library responsibility. It was pointed out by a councillor that these plays would probably not be available for a production, but it was decided to refer the matter to the library committee to take up with the loca1 playreading group to see what use they could be put to if acquired by the library. . *. * * A quote of £165 forcthe digging of a new soak pit at the abattoir, 300 feet long, 10 feet wide and eight feet "deep, was submitted by an engineering firm in Levin and accepted by the coun^l. It was stated that the situation at the abattoirs was one of urgency. * * * The Public Trust Office wrote advising that as from August 1 the rate of interest allowed on moneys held in the Common Fund womd be further reduced to three per cent. The letter was received without comment. * * * The Municipal Association wrote requesting that the town clerk, Mr. H. L. Jenkins, be allowed to represent the association on the abattoir committee of the Standards Institue working upon draft model-by-laws. It was decided that owing to stalf s'hortage at the borough office the council could not accede to this request.
