"A Unique Man." "I have never heard of such a man; he must be unique," sai'd Mr. Justice Tyndall, in the Arbitration Cour£ when a witness said that an employee at the Heathcote County Council's pumping station was in attendance "for practically 24 hoursa day, all the year round." "That is according to his statement," said witness. "The man has told you a fairy story. If you are going to put this stuff up here, you are off the rail," said Mr. Justice Tyndall. " Manawhenua Trial Game. In order that both selectors can observe the toest players in both unions pr.ior to selecting the Manawhenua rugby team to oppose the Australian visitors, an endeavour is being made to> arrange a trial game at Foxton. It will probably have to be held on a week day. This was discussed at the meeting last night of the management committee of the Horowhenua union, when the sole selector, Mr. D. J. Oliver, said he eonsidered sych a game would be necessary. Latfer the secretary, Mr. J. E. Fullarton, contacted the Manawatu union which, although agreeing tentatively, said that nothing could be 'done until the return of their selector from the southern rugby tour.
Gorge Road Slips. When passage through the Manawatu Gorge became dangerous early last night it was decided to close it until this morning. Several slips were blocking the road and two cars had been involved in accidents. One had been jammed in toy a, slip and had to be dug out. Another was hit on the roof by a bouMer and although there was no serious damage done, the roof was badly dented. Two men were posted in the Gorge to watch for further slips last night. * Others were working on the slips early this morning and it was hoped to have the road open for one way traffic by 9 a.m. Traffic was diverted over the Saddle Road but even there extreme care was necessary because of a long succession of.minor slips. / • Christmas Travelling. An indication of heavy travelling over the Christmas holi'days is the heavy booking for the inter-island ferries. Although it is a long time before December, there is a rush to secure berths. The officer of the Wellington Automobile Association in Levin, Mr. R. Keenan, said this morning that association members intending to travel to the South Island and wishing to make their bookings [through the association should call at the office as soon as possible, as ships sailing between December and January are ihostly booked out already. He added that members should also be sure to book for the return jouroey at the same time, or they would undoubtedly be disappointed if they left it until later.
