Educational Institute Holds Monthly Meeting

. There was a Very good atteridance at the July meeting of the Horowhenua branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute, held in Levin school last week. Miss Mervin, of the Opiki School, was welcomed by' the" president, Mr. W. H. Townrow, who hoped she would have a long and enjoyable stay in the Horowhenua district. On the motion of Mr. F; O. Burtt, it was decided to pursue inquiries as'to when the new infant readers were to be introduced into the schools, by the Education Department, and to ask if it was the intention for them to be supplied simultanoeusly throughout the infant departments. At the request of the committee of branches, the question of fortnightly pay for teachers1 was discussed. The committee of branches' delegate was inscructed to inform the committee that the present system of monthly pay was favoured by the majority of memhers. It was decided to congratulate Mr. E. J. }Vatts, a former headmaster of Ohau School and a past president of the branch, on-his appointment to the inspectorate, and. to forward a letter of sympathy to Mr. A. Bringans, an inspector of schools in the Wellington Education Board area. Mr. Townrow introduced Mr. L. J. Wild, Pro-Chancellor of the University of New Zealand, to the meeting. Mr. Wild dealt with the functions of the university colleges and the senate, and placed before members the case for and against the extra-mur.al students. After Mr. Wild had answered the questions raised by members, Mr. Burtt Lhanked him for the frouble he had gone to in order to' address members on a question that was of vital concern to the teaching profession. The meeting closed with votes of thanks to the ladies for the afternoon tea arrangements and.to thechair. • -
