Personal. Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Cooksley, of Main Street, have returned after a'n extended holiday visit to Australia. Mr. A. Bradbury, of Otaki Railway, who recently underwent an operation, returned to his home at the weekend. . Misses Janet and Betty Hakaraia, who have been home on leave, returned to St. Joseph's, Napier, on Monday. Mr. G. McKinley, of Main Street, following an operation in the Palmerston North Hospital, is reported to be making satisfactory progress. Miss J. Heath, of Pongaroa, was a successful candidate from the Otaki Maternity Hospital in the State examinatiofi for maternity nursing. Mr. S. Denton, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Denton, of Otaki Railway, who took a nasty fall while competing at a point-to-point meeting on Saturday last, is in hospital with seven broken ribs. Mr. A. Webby, of Mill Road, while refereeing- a hockey match on the domain on Saturday, was struck a severe blow in the mouth with the ball. Apart from the fact that his top and lower dentures were broken, he is little the worse for the mishap. Air Ride Cures Whooping Cough. A height of 10,500 feet was reached recentiy by the pilot of a plane who had Miss Heather Rhind, of Tasman Beach, as a passenger, in an attempt to cure a severe attack of whooping cough. The flight was successful and the youthful suffer•er obtained speedy relief. Co-operative Elfort. A 'dance to be held on Friday night in the Textiles Social Hall is advertised. Arrangements are in g'ood hands and something special in the way of music is to be provided. Proceeds are for a co-opera-tive effert, and an enjoyable time is assured. Bowling Club Officers. The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the Paraparaumu Beach Bowling Club: President, Mr. E. A. A. Thorne; vice-president, Mr. W.'White Scott; secretary, Mr. A. J. Petherick; treasurer, Mr. A. Hardham; committee, Messrs S. M. Stone, N. Skeet, T. Rickeits, H. Walton, T. K. Henderson, W. I. J. Biyth. Harriers Visit. A large party of visiting harriers was in Otaki on Saturday and had an organised run over a route in the vicinity of the golf links and Mr. E. P. Simcox's property at Waiorongomai. Arrangements, which inchrded afternoon tea, served in the Anglican Hall, were in the hands of Mr. and Mrs. W. Scatchard, of Rangiuru, the former a harrier of repute. Local Boxer Impresses. At Palmerston North on Monday night, Bob Hakaraia fought a return bout of four rounds with C. Ball, whom he had defeated on a prior occasion. The bout was a particularly fast one with the local lad gaining an early points lead. Ball made up some of the leeway late in the contest, and he was given the decision. On Monday next, July 25, Hakaraia is to meet B. Elley at Wellington, the bout to be one of the curtain-raisers to the main championship bout. Hockey Teams' Visit. Two teams from the Manawatu Knitting Mills visited Otaki at the weekend, when friendly games of hockey were played. The local teams on this occasion proved superior and two victories were attained. Rahui la'dies won their game by three goals to one, and Raukawa secured four goals to their- opponents' one. Afternoon tea was provided for the visitors, who were loud in their praise of the hospitality extended. "They admitted also that the calibre of the local teams was better than they anticipated, and wished them continued success. Marching Committees 'Active. While marching teams are in recess during the winter months the committees responsible for the future welfare of the teams are not allowed to remain idle. Following the outstanding success of the first marching championships held at Otaki recently, discussions to assisti the teams in their preparations for an early start in the new season have followed, and many functions have been arranged. A dance in aid of the Bandoliers team, which was held at Manakau on Saturday last, saw a very large crowd present, and the door takings are said to be a record for ^his type of function. A friendly basketball match between the Bandoliers and the Petone Rebels teams is to take place at Otaki during August, with the visiting' team the guests of the Bandoliers at a dance to be held the night before. It is understood that ■ teams will resume practice during August and that there is a distinct possibility of a third team taking the field. Mr. T. Matthews, formerly an instructor in the Wairarapa, has consented to act in that capacity for the Tuis intermediates, he having taken up residence in Otaki.
