Cattle Die And People Pray For Rain
Received Wednesday 7 p.m. LONDON, July 13. An Associated Press Johannesburg correspondent says the severe drought is causing heavy losses in the EaSt London district. Farmers axe killing off even their "best breeding stock before the cattie become worthless or die. In one area alone it is- estimated that 5000 head have died of starvation in the last few weeks. • Four thousand^ citizens gat-hered in the City Hall at East London over the week-end to pray for rain and. another 3000 knelt in the streets outside. ( If East London had not been a seaside town it would already have been evacuated". Sea water is now used for all ordinary household purpopes and the city council has erected huge canvas tanks carrying sea water at all strategic points.
