. Received Thursday, '9.5 '33m. . r . NORTHAMPTON, July 13. The New Zeaiand batsmen showed their ■ sincere appreciation of Hadlee winning the toss for the second time in the last 15 matcb.es by scoring seven for 456 against Northamptonshire. Sutcliffe and. Scott made their sixth century partnership for a first wicket and Scott celebrated by reaching .4000 runs — he'- required one at; the' start , of the match — by hitting his fourth century ,';of the tour. With Hadlee, he added, 97 and the New Zeaiand eaptain followed his fine knock at Derby by batting . freely* for a bright- 71. Another pieasant fe.ature "bf the. New Zeaiand innings- was the contmued good form shown by Reid, who .m'ade 107 (not ' out) in .115 minutes," this total including 17 fours. It was his best batting since he arrived in (England and was brimmed with self-confidence. Northamptonshire, without their eaptain, Brown, who is playing for the Gentiemen at Lords, had hoped that the wicket, after careful preparation and watering, would liven and produce a crop of quick wickets; but the New Zealanders had other ideas and their average rate of scoring for the 'day was 76 runs hourly. The weather forecast is for thunder showers, which may complicate matters for the Northants batting. The gate was £678. Delightful Batting. Both Sutciifl'e and Scott batted deiightfmly. Though he was rather
tired after helping win the game against Derby, Sutcliffe showed no sign of fatigue this morning and
his shots were beautifqlly timed and powered. The left-hander had scored 81 in 127 minutes (11 fours) when he was caught at deepish mid-on. Hadlee scored rapidly and was 50 in an hour. Scott reached his century in 3 hrs. 5 mins. (nine fours) and 250 were on tlie board in the same time. Wallace, after a full-blooded square cut, was beaten by ' Nutter's pace and was caught at second siip by Skinner, who fell but held on. Wallace's spell of' bad luck seems interminable. Hadlee lasted until after tea (two for 274), and in attempting to late cut Nutter he hit his wicket. Reid and Donnelly added 58 in 50 minutes, when Donnelly turned an easy catch to Barron at leg. Mooney was soon among the runs. He was bowled by Garlick after he had shown some good strokes. Detaiis: — NEW ZEALAND. First Innings.
