Horses Do The Hard Work On Ruapehu
WANGANUI, July 9. So that guests at Chateau Tongariro may use fhe high-leveh skiing grounds on the north slopes of Ruapehu' without' -climbing there the hard way, two paekhorses worlted for three weeks on treacherous seoria and rock hauling ski tow equipmetn to an altitude of 6000ft. In doing so they are thought. to have sefc a New Zealand record for working at such heights. Only at the iwee, kencl, ln that period, did they crop grass. During the week they were housed in a shed at Salt Hut 4800ft above sea leVel.1 At this altitude, well above the scrub line, they fed on fodder hauled by a truck over the tortuous mountain road which runs to the hut - from the Chateau. > ► At the weekend, when no work was done on what will be New Zealand 's highest and one of its longest ski tows, the horses were brought down to National Park, wliere they had soft ground to walk on, real grass to eat and less rarified air to breathe.
