BASKETBALL NOTES

i 'Forward")

Some High Scores Recorded On Saturday

(By 4

Saturday's basketball . saw somesurprisingly high scoring — Wanderers '29 goa,s, College A' 24, College B 22, Textile A 22 and Tui,- A 20. Outside the scoring of Joyce Winiata, who is consistently goo'd, these scorers indicate that forwards are giving some time and thought to practice. College D and Primary B were the lowest scorers of the day, which indicates thait their opponents' defence was too good or that they need more practice. The top scorers are to be congratulated on their goo'd play. Methods Not To Be U^ed. This week I am going to 11st some methods which a piayer may not use. The ball may not be rolled or dragged along the ground, not ever a short distance. -A player mai bat the ball or bounce it only once She may not bat and bounce tht ba1!. A common mistake .is tc flick the ball with one hand an. bat it with the other. This i equivaient. to bats and -s accordingly penalised. A player may not leave her secrion of the court while the ball i. in play. If she does, and her sid. is in possession she is pena'ised When the defence, or any othe p ayer, throws the „bal". info tht court when it hss been put out by the opposing side, or when the 'defence throws in after an unsuccessful shot at goai, this p ayer ma;' not be outside the c urt when hei side takes the ball. This rule it generally couched in the words "A player must re-en er the cour. quickly after a i'hrow-in." Don't Touch Goal Post. A player may reach o rer and take the ball from an adjacent third, bu she commits an infringement u she touches the ground or enother player in so doing. Forwardv should remembe: that they may not touch the gral post when onc of their number is aiming at goal. Referees as a rule indicate the spot at which ?■ free pass is to be taken by p1acing a foot on that spot, and yet mny players disregard this and take the nass at the spot whei'e they happen to be standing. Naturahy the referee then gives the pass to the opposing side at the spot where the infringement occurred. After an unsuccessful shot at goal the 'defence may throw in at any spot with the area. marked by the goal circle, but if the ball goes out of play in the ordinary way the, referee }ndicates the spot where the ball left ■Ihe court, and the pass-in must be taken from that spot. Referees' Examination. Those wishing to sjt the referees' examination are reminded that it is generafiy hel'd on the first Monday in July.
