Tidy Frontages Win Prizes At Shannon
Adverse conditions to try the heart of ,the most enthusiastic gardener, prevailed over the last ten days of the period of three months ending this week, when three judges toured the borough to award the prizes given by Mrs. H. G. Leng Ward for the most attraetive house or section street frontage and the neatest and tidiest frontage. There +is evidence in all - 'directions that 'efforts have. been made by a large number of people to improve their surroundings and the results achieved have not only given pleasure -to -themselves but also to the passer-byl The judges commehted on the bad hal?it a few still have of dumping their'- tree cuttings anu* garden rubbish on the street, making unsightly heaps. This subject provoked a discussion at a borough council meeting some. fime agp. Since a -previous similar competi- e tion, a large amount of spade work in levelling and cleaning street frontages has and is being done, notably by Mr. and. Mrs. I. Penn at the corner of Vance and Vogel Streets. To all who'participated in the competition Mrs. Leng Ward extends her sincere thanks; also to the judges for generously giving their tiine and services. The re'SuIts were as follows: — Most -attraetive, Mr. and Mrs. C. Braasington, Julyan Street; run-ner-up, Mr. and Mrs. Swindlehurst, Stout Street. Neatest and tidiest, Mr. and Mrs. I. Hemmingsen, Stout Street; run-ner-up, Miss Joyce ' Pigott, Vance A further competition wi.ll be arranged when a large number of almost winners will be given a chance of being in the prize list.
