Chilled Beef Makes Big Display
AUCKLAND. June 8. An exhibition of chifier beef — said to be the biggest of its kind ever held in the British Empire — is being held today at the Westfield Freezing Company's works. In long rows down the cooling floor are carcases of cattle which last week were prizewinners in the "Beef for Britain" competition at the Waikato Winter Show. Chiiler meat is not frozen. It is the elosest approach possible to fresh meat. At the Westfield ceremonv today, Sir Alexander Young, of the Winter Show Association, presented ' the trophy for the champion chiiler steer — weight 601720 lbs— to Mr. J. E. Richardson, of Te A'kau. The juclges of the beef on the hooks said the standard was very evcn and the qualitv good hut some .carcases showed a tendency to be overfat. Nl"r. H. P. Rtevens, ITnited Kingdom Trade Commissioner, said that in tho first quarter of 1049., the average weeklv consumption of frosh. frozen or chi lled meat in t he Hui t ed Kingdom was 27,()U0 tons, a drop of over 13.000 tons weekly and roughlv one-third of the prewar total. Between 1939 and 1949 the population of Britain increased bv over 2,000,000 people — more than the entxre population of ATew Zealand.
