Twenty-Nine Road Deaths In May

WELLINGTON; June 3. Eatal traffic accidents in May Resulted in 29 deaths, the highest monthly total for two years. Releasing these ,figures to-day, the Minister of Transport (Mr Hackett) said that already this year 96 people had been killed on roads, an increase of 16 oyer the same periocl last year. Most of the additiqnal fatalities, he said, occurred in ' May when weather and light conditions deteriorated. Returns to han'd from the present headlight tests showed, he said, that of 4000 vehicles ehecked over 500 had faulty headlights. This, the Minister added, was a shocking state of aft'airs, and he instructed that these ehecks be continued and that the offenders be issued with traffic olfence notices. The Minister appdaled to drivers to .exercise ■ additional care over King 's' Bi^tliday weelc-end when there wouid be considerabiy increased traffic, and reiterated his apjxeal for safe winter driving.
