Fines And Penalties In Levin Court

- — ; Two youths were eharged with having liquor in .the'vicinity of a dance hall in the Magistrate's Court, Levin, yesterday. They were Mervyn John Andrews and Barryffiore William Clifton, and they plea'ded gufty hy letter. Sergeant W. Graingef told the magistrate, Mr. A. A. McLachlan. that Constable A. T. Kelk had been on du y near the Kimberley Hall on May 27, when he had seen the two defendants leave the hall for a car. Beer had been found in their possession. Both were fihed £3 with costs. Ian John Evans was cnarged with attempting to cross the railway line at the Liverpool Street level crossing when the line was not clear. Sergeant Grainger said that Evans had been driving a-ong the main- road and 'had turned -ofi at the crossing, when he had coliided with the fourth to last truck of a train. He ' had sustaine'd faifly severe injuries ahd the vehicle had been extensively damaged. "I suppose you will regard that * as a compulsory stop in fulure," commented the magistrate . when imposing a finehf £l." Colin Robert- Harper, also of Shannon, was fined 5s for the sarrie offence. Costs were 10s. Horace Wi ford Hume Clifton was fined £1 for driving a vehicle without a warrano- of fitness. Evidence was given by Traffic Inspector D. W. S. Boyes to the effect that he had stopped defandant and no warrant had been issued for the vehicle for nine months. Costs were 10s.
