Work at Maraetai Progresses
HAMILTON, May 19. The eoffer dam which was placed across the Waikato River at Maraetai to divert it through the tunnel has now been completed to its full height. Its top was nsed as a road yesterday for the first time. Material for the second coffer dam to be erected just downstream from the tunnel inlet is -being deposited at the site. Shingle and boulders are being taken from the river bed by a large overhead dragline excavator. Except for a leakage of some 200 cubic feet a second, the river has oeen eft'ectually dammed back and diverted through the tunnel at great pressnre. The normal flow is 10,000 cubic feot a second, but the partial closing of the control gate at Taupo has caused it to drop to 2000 cusecs to-day. The water overflows the inlet to the tunnel and surges back for some distanee. At the outlet end its depth equals three-quarters of the heignt of the tunnel. The tunnel has withstood satisfaetorily the heavy pressure to which it has been subjected. The engineers in eharge are not concerned about the seepage that is takiug
