Move To Get South Africa And India Together

A joint resolution calling on the Indian and South Afriean Governments to l'enew efforts to reach an agreeinent on the Indian complaint against the South Afriean Government, was« pur before the United Nations General Assenibly's Politieal Committee today by Australia, Denmark and Sweden. India has eompla.ined to United Nations of South Africa 's treatment or Indian residents. The joint resolution asked India and South Africa to try to settle the dispute at a roundtable coni'erence or through mediation and conciliation. The resolution further asked tluPresident of the General Assembly and SeCretary-General of United Nations, to render all assistanee in bringing the partids together and, if necessary, to designate a mediator. •• Mr. Erie Louw, South Afriean Minis ter for Eeopomie Aifairs, said the sub jeet of India's complaint was essentially within the domestic jurisdiction of South Africa and did not fall within the competence of United Nations. Sir Carl Berendsen (New Zealand » said he would support any move tb refer United Nations' competence to the International Court of Justice or to bring the parties together but he would uo't support any resolution on thc merits of a case which would eondenm or eondone.
