Market Heavily Supplied With Cabbages
Messrs Townsend and Paul, Ltd., fruit and produce merchants, Wel lington, report that during the past week heavy supplies of cabbage have been arriving and values have dropped probably 50 per cent. on last week. Cauliflower is still in ■ strong demand, top values being 27s 6d. per sack, while gr^en peas, although cheaper today, 'have been realising exceptionally attractive values, this being only temporary. however. A keen demand wds felt for pumpkins and kumeras. Consignments of potatoes, owing to late dehveries from the South, are sxrongly recommended when ceiling price is virtually assured. Heavy yardings of poultry have been offered; values have been remaining firm and present indications are for a slight rise. Values from Thursday's sale are as follows: — Vegetables: Artichokes, 3s to 6s; carrots, 4s to 6s 6d; sprouts, ,35s to 40s sugar bag; beans, runner, 8d to Is; stringless, ls to ls 2£d; peas, choice, 8d to ls ld; others, 3d to 7d per pound ; beetroot, 3s to 5.s ; cucumbers, 30s to 34s; lettuce, choice, 15s to 20s; others, 5s to 10s; ieeks, 8s to 15s; parsnips, 6s to 9s; rhubarb, 5s to 8s; silverbeet, 2s to 5s; spinach, 21s to 30s; white turnips, 4s to 6s per case; cabbage, 4s to 7s; cauliflowers, 18s to 27s 6d; marrows, 5s to 6s; pumpkins, 10s to 16s 6d; swedes, 8s to 12s per sack; kumeras, 30s to 32s; potatoes, 17s 6d cwt.; onions, 10s to 12s bag; mint, 4d to 8d; radish, 6d bunch. Fruit: Tree tomatoes, red, 10s to 15s; yellow, 8s to 10s; chinese gooseberries, 22s to 29s; cape gooseberries, 6s to 7s; persimmons, 6s to 9s; feijoas, 8s to 9s half case; passion fruit, ls to ls 4d dozen; N.Z. grapefruit, 22s to 29s bushel case; grapes, Hawke's Bay, 3s to 3s 7d; outside, ls to ls 5d per pound. Flowers: Poppies, tangerine, 2s • 6d to 4s; art, 4s 6d to 5s 6d; carnations, 14s to 20s gross; violets, 4s 6d to 9s per dozen; chrysanthemums, best, ls 9d to 4s per dozen. Poultry: White Leghorn hens, 3s 6d to 5s 3d; Black Orpington hens, 6s to 10s 6d; white ducks, 7s to 12s 6d; coloured, 5s 6d to 10s; geese, 6s each; cockerels, ls 9d to 2s; turkeys, 2s to 2s 3d per pound live weight.
