Fire Board's Annual And Quarterly Meetings

The annual meeting of the Otaki Fire Board was held at the fire station recently. Those present were Messrs Russell, Nicholson, E. J. Cook, H. B. Edhouse (chairman), B. H. Rhodes (seeretary), DeputySuperintendent S. W. Harvey and the brigade seeretary, Mr. O. B. Nilsson. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs J. Retter and C. Sharp. Mr. Edhouse was elected chairman for the ensuing year. • The annual accounts and balance sheet produced by the seeretary were aj>proved subject to audit, and the superintendents' report was adopted. Estimates for 1949-50, totalling £400, are to be submitted to the Minister for approval. ■ The quarterly meeting of the board was also held. Prior to the commencement of business, members inspected the brigade and the chairman presented honours won, congratulating the recipients. Accounts totalling £236 18s 7d, as presented by the seeretary, were passed for payment, and the superintendent's quarterly report was r&ad and approved. Discussion regarding the replacement of used and nearly worn out boots for firemen resulted in the local committee being empowered to make the necessary purchase if samples proved satisfactory. The question of firemen attending a theatre on duty, and the degree of authority such attendance carried, was left in the hands of Mr. Russell to report on. An enquiry from the brigade regarding the duties of the caretaker wras considered. These are to be posted in the fire station and the caretaker advised afresh of his duties. T'his maxter will be re-viewed-at the next quarterly meeting. The board decided to communicate with the Otaki Borough Council advising that in the board's opinion the upstairs exits at the Civic Theatre, owned by the council, were inadequate and constituted a danger to human life, and to recommend to the council that steps be taken to remedy the posiion and elimina'te the danger.
