Board Asked To Reinstate Community Lighting
Community lighting under shop verandahs was the subject of a lengthy discussion which brcught for some comment from members of the Horowhenua Electric Power Board at its monthly meeting on I Wednesday. / 1 The Foxton Chamber of Commerce wrote asking*that the board give serious thought to the possibility of re-instating the community lighting system in that town. In view of the statement by the board's chairman, Mr. T. G.. Vincent, that "the small amount ' of power required for street lighting purposes in a year was insufflcienu to supply the demands on the board for one day," it was ie t that this was a further inducement to give the requested service, remarked the letter. It was to be regretted that there was nothing to add to the previous communication with the chamber, commented thp chairman. While it was known that street lighting1 did not seriously affect the consumption of electricity in the district, if further connections were made to any great extent it might well have serious consequenCes. What was the position in regard to shop window lighting, asked Mr. H. Dustin^ i .. .,.44 The occupier received a qubta ;and he was entitled to use it as 'he wished, replipd the .chairman. | The managing-secret'ary, Mr. R. A. Frederikson, poiiited "out that there was very little chance of an increased quota being granted for |shop window lighting. \ The engineer, Mr. J. F. Bryce, said that the question raised by one of the members in regard to bright lights in shop windows couid have resulted from the use of fluorescent lighting. These lights gave more illumination without a greater consumption of electricity, The board then resolved itself into eommittee on the motibn of Mr. F. W. Vickerman. It was later decided to reply to the chamber stating that the board regretted it had ncthing to add to its previous communication, but it would review the position at an early date. To this end the engineer was instructed to bring down a report for the next meeting, giving detafls of what the consumption of electricity would be far community lighting throughout the district.
