What The Borough Will Pay For River Work

The classification list of lands likely to receive any benefit, direct or indirect, as a result of the Manawatu Catchment Board's river control and drainage scheme was fully discussed' &t a reeent meeting of the .Otaki Borough Council held last week. The tatai annual rate to be levied is expeeted to yield £2515, arid the Otaki Borough will coniribute £1320, slightly more than half the total with the Otaki Riding of the Hpro whenua County contributing £800 and the Te Horo riding £405. The Otaki and Waitohu Rivers, Mangaone, Mangapouri, Rangiuru and other streams are in the catchment board's scheme. It was pointed'-out that the basis of the classification was the varying degree of benefit the ratepayer would be likely to receive, and that the 'Act provided the board with power to rate according to the valuation roll. The Otaki Borough is at present being revalued, as at March 31, 1949, and the discussion revealed that the council is watching the position closely. The town clerk, Mr. Alex. Wilson, is to advise the board that the re valuation is shortly to be released, with the idea of ascertaining how the new position will affecfthe classification. It was generally agreed that the result, and the sum it was expeeted to yield, would remain the same. The borough has been divided into five classes rated either at £10, £7 10s, £5, £2 10s or £1 5s per £1000 capital value. For example if a property vaTued at £500 was in the £10 class, the annual rate would be £5. If the same property was in the £2 10s class the rate would be £1 5s. Assessments not objected to £he final, and it was considered that further important work will be held up until the board can collect revenue necessary for it to fdnctipn. Opinions expressed were. that ihe river protection work already done had been of considerable benefit. The classification list is available for inspection at the borough office until April 27. i
