Council Grants £50 For New Library Books
At a recent meeting of the Shannon Borough Council it was resolved, on the motion of the Mayor, Mr. D. A. Fitzgerald, 'that £50 be granted to the library committee for the purpose of purchasing new bo.oks. In moving the motion, the Mayor said that it was from the rental section that the library received its fun-ds and at the moment this section was being taxed, with the result that at times here were very few rental books on the shelves. Mr. Fitzgerald pointed out that with the colder weather coming on there were more subscribers to the library and the committee should take advantage of the winter months to build up its revenue. This could only be done by increasing the number of books in the rental section. It was agree'd that the library needed more books of fiction and councillors put forward many suggestions to the committee as to the type of books required. ' In reporting to the council, the chairman of the library committee, Cr. H. L. Norris, said that the library account was very satisfactory and with the addition of new books for the winter months the funds should be in a most satisfactpry condition within a short time. Cr. Norris advised that it had been decided to alter the Tuesday evening hours and the library Woul'd now be open from 6.30 .to 1.30 p.m. on Tuesday evenings. ' .The council approved this action. Thanks were expressed by Cr. Norris to Mr'S. J. T. Bovis for her donation of books and to Mr. T. S. Downes for his donation of Mr. G. Leslie Adkin's recent publication "Horowhenua." It was agreed that this book would he an asset to the library.
