Good Percentage Of School Swimmers

In his report to the Shannon School Committee recently, the headmaster, Mr. F. O. Burtt, said that a great deal of time had been devoted this summer to teaching swimming and the results were most gratifying. In the senior classes the percentage who could: now swim was as follows: — Standard 3, 52 per cent.; standard 4, 71, per cent.; form I, 72 per cent.; form II, 97 per cerit. "When it is remembered that a number of children are not allowed. in the baths hecause of health reasons, and a swimmer is one who. can swim across the baths, it will be seen that good progress has been made,"- said Mr. Burtt. The1 following certificates have been awarded:-— Twenty-five to 50 yards, 27 certificates; 50 to 220 yards, 26 certificates; 220 to*880 yards, four certificates; 880 yards, two certificates. It was pointed out that the swim-, ming competition arranged between the Levin and Shannon Schools had to he cancelled because of the sudden change of weather. While dealing with -sport, ' Mr. Burtt advised that cricket and longball teams from the ; local school had visited Levin and competed against that school. Although defeated, the local children provided good competition and learned much.
