Some Vegetables Prices Show Sharp Rise
Messrs. Townsend and Paul, Ltd., fruit and produce -merchants, Wellington, report that during the past week the falling off in supplies of stoned fruits has greatly increase'd the demand. Golden Queen and Golden Eagle peaches are keenly sought after, together with Omega and Doris plums. Early consignments of chinese gooseberries realised up to 44s per box, and Meyer lemons and passion fruit are bringing attractiye values. C,a^;( bage, cauliflowers and green" peas took a sharp rise, the latter returning up to ls per pound, cauliflowers making 28s per sack. For flowers there is a very strong demand for all choice blooms. Large yardings" of poultry have been offered and for prime birds excellent returns have been shown. Quotations are as follows: — Fruit: Peaches, 7s to 13s 6d; Doris plums, 12s 6'd; Omega, 18s; tomatoes, 6s to 8s; others, 3s to 5s; Meyer lemons, 15s to 20s 6d; persimmons, 6s and 9s, all half cases; quinces, 6s to 8s 6d threequarter bushel cases; cape gooseberries, 9s to 11s; passion fruit, 10s to 14s; chinese gooseberries, 35s to 44s, all boxes, grapes, outside, ls to ls 3d. Vegetables : Mushro'oms,- 2s 6'd to 3s per lb.; beans, runner, 2d to 4d; stringless, 2£d to 5d; peas, 7d to ls per lb.; beetroot, 6s to 8s; cucumbers, 8s to 12s!; lettuce, 10s to 15s;' leeks, 12s to 15s; marrows, 2s to 4s 6d; rhubarb, 4s to 7s; silver beet, 2s to 4s; spinach, 12s to 14s; celery, 10s to 12s; rock melons, 12s to 14s, [all cases; cabbage, 7s to 15s; cauliflowers, 20s to 28s; pumpkins, 6s to 10s; parsnips, 12s to 14s; swedes, 8s all, oacks; carrots, 6s to 10s persugar bag; sweet corn, 8s to 9s per bushel; kumeras, 7s to 10s; onions,
15s to 16s; potatoes, 14s to 17s cwt.; mint, 6d; parsley, 4d and 6d; chinese cabbage, 6d to ls; whit'e turnip, 3d to 5d per bunch. Flowers: Carnations, 12s to 18s; asters, best, 10s to 14s; others, 3s 6d to 6s per gross; gladioli, 5s to 9s; nerines, 3s to 6s; chrysanthemums, 2s 6d- and 5s 6d per dozen; violets, 3s to 6s per dozen bunches. Poultry: White Leghorn hens, 2s 6d to 5s 3d; Black Orpington hens, 4s to 14s; geese, 6s 6d to 7s 6d_; white 'ducks, 7s to 15s; coloured ducks, 3s 6d to 9s 6d all each; cockerels, ls 9d to 2s; turkeys, 2s 3d per lb. live weight.
