Rugby Union Discusses Last Season's Deficit

The opinion that . the financial loss suit'ered by the Horowiienua Rugby - Union last . season was tjie. result of the incorrect decision« madet by the New Zealand Rugby Union in regard to the foxton1 botmdary dispute was .expressed by the Shannon Football1 Club at the anhual meeting ofr-the Horownenua union last night, The club recommended that in view of this, the question of the reimbursement of , the loss shou'd "be taken up with j the New Zealand union. He considered that the matter Jsh-ould be taken up from a different angle, commented the presi- | dent, Mr. R. - L. Robinson. The union should ask the parent body 'to. make a grant to Horowhenua to assist rugby football generally, i Supporting the recommendation, Mr. W. Moynihan remafked that Horowhenua had been very severely1 penalised by the action of the New Zealand union, and he considered that a profit would have been. 1 shown on the year.'s workings had the Foxton club .remained with Horowhenua. As it was, a deficit o'f £84 5s lOd had resulted. He felt tnat it was perfectly reasonable to request this reimbursement, At this .stage, Mr. Moynihan asked the meeting to go into committee, stating that members would realise the reaSon for his request when he made his comments. 'The chairman asked him not to s'tress anything -rellative to the Foxton club too strongly at this stage because "we have Foxton back again and we are all one happy family again." ? ' ' •■' :f The meeting then resolved into committee and after further .discussion it was decided that the matter be left to the- management committee. Two other recommendations from the Shannon club came forward. One dealt with the question " of club games being played alternately home and away. Mr. Robinson pointed out that this had been aune- wherever possible in the past and would be continued. The other recommendation was that separate coaches sho^fid "be appointed for each senior representative team. This arose out of the position where there had been only one coach for the senior A and B representative teams, explained the chairman. Mr. R. Denton mentioned that on one Saturday a representative match had been played at Pahiatua and all the offlcials had gone to that match, but no' one had attended the representative match at Levin. It was desirable that someone saw how the players performed in all representative games, he said. All present agreed that this was desirable and the matter would be taken up by the management committee, remarked Mr. Robinson. The reason for the shortage of coaches for teams was thought by Mr. D. J. Oliver to be in the number of players Who finished active participation and "disappeared." It was not an easy task at; times to get sultable men to coach teams, he said, and if some of the older players would agree to coine forward and take up this task, then rugby 'football throughout the district would! benefit.
