Would Reinstate Capital Punishment

A very definite statement that capital punishment would be reinstated in New Zealand should his party be returned as the Government at the next general election, was made at last night's annual meeting of the Levin branch of the National Party by the district M.P., Mr. J. J. Maher. "The only way to protect our womenfolk in this country is to reinstate capital punishment," he remarked. "Is it right that they should have to walk down the middle of the road, be afraid to go out or be left by themselves at night? We say that when a criminal is sentenced to penal servitude for life, he should stay there for life and not be let out in ten years' time."
