Coalition Supporters Poll Well In France

Received- Tuesday, 9.20 a.m. PARIS, March 21. The parties supporting a Coalition Government won 382 of the 723 seats decided in the departmental (county) council elections yesterday. Altogether 1508 seats were contested. Where one candidate did not secure more votes than his opponents added together, a second election will be held on March 27 on a simple majority. Resuhs for the 723 seats decided were: — Government parties 382, de Gaullist group 170, Independent Republicans 154, Communists 17. Normally, the elections are contested purely on local issues, but both Communists and de Gaullists are making an all-out political issue of the vote. The test is whether the Coalition Government can hold out against the two extremist forces.
