America's Atom Bomb City Open To Public

NEW YORK, March 19. The atom city of Oakridge (Termessoe) built in 1942 was opened today to the public when an atomic-generated eleetric impulse, the first ever transmitted by wire, burned a ribbon at oue of the city's fonr gates. Oakridge " population of 36,000 had been pne of the nation 's most closely guarded areas in history. Visitors today saw little evidence of atomic developments, for at the same instant the ribon went up in a puff of smoke new seeurity regulations went into effect for plants producing uranium 235 for atomic bombs. They are now guarded more closely than ever by a new 24-mile fence erecfed to keep oui the curionr.. Mr. Dawid Lilienthal, chairman of tht LTnited Btates Atomic Energy Commission, inj opening the city, said: "Thefe would be no need for us to lock up pui socretf or barricade pa^-t of our iiperties if Russia had agreed to the Ameri can proposals to share atomic secrets* under effeetive control," he said. He hoped that in time all barriers would be removed from Oakridge.
