Australia Builds Up With Migrants
Received Monday, 10.35 p.m. CANBBRRA, March 14. The inhux of migrants should bring Australia 's population to 8,000,000 hefore the end of next year, said the Minister of Immigration, Mr. Calwell, today. New. Settlers were now arriviiig at the rate of nearly 88,000 yearly. "If we .reach the 8,000,000 mark in 1950 it will have taken us eleven years to have bridged' the population gap hetween 7,000,000 and 8,000,000," said Mr. Calwell. "Thanks largely to'our ever increasing intake of new settlers,- together with our high reproduction rate, we can expect to reach the 9,000,000 mark in less than five years. Prospects toaay are brighter than ever that the average Australian alive now will live to see a population of 20,000,000 in this country." *
