Heavy Fines Imposed on Bookmakers
DUNEDIN, March 7. Fines totalling £400 were imposed on two ineii for bookmaking when tlieyi pleadcd guilty before Mr. J. D. Wiliis, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court this morning. Vernon Henry Jones was lined £250 and Rov Jefferv McKeigh £150. Chief Detective T. \'. Hall said it was found that Jones had taken £56 ir. iietting when his home was visited at ! 11.50 a.m. on Februarv 26. Ile had | lieen previously ednvicted for the same . ofl'eni'C. Jones had acted in defiance of ' the intiiuation given by the Court j when he was convicted in 1945. ! Mr. Wiliis said: "1 intend to inflict heavy penalties on those who come back. " Oue nionth 's hard labour was fixed in default of immediate payment.
