GAMING POLL
l ATTITUDE of the churches I A fear has been expressed by the churches that the proposal to legalise off-course betting will increase gambling. This is contrary to the ■considered opinion of both the j Royal Gaming Commission and the ! Racing arid Trotting Conferences, The proposed Scheme will prohibit betting on credit. This will not ; only prevent persons betting be- : yond their means, but must have ! the eff ect of reducing the actual ! amount of betting. The prohbition j of young people under 21 from bet- | ting and the stopping of touts j soliciting bets in factories and | ofRces will also tend -in the same ! direction. Fundamentally, the poll i at which everyone is asked to vote on March 9th next is for or against illegal bookmakers. If, as the past 40 years' experience hasTShOwn, it is impossible to prohibit off-course betting effectively, 'surely a legal Scheme of properly controlled offcourse' betting should be introduced. Your vote FOR the proposal will therefore be a vote «for law, decency and order. (Issued bv authority N.Z. Racing andi Trotting Conferences.)
