Final Meeting Of Pipe Band Contest Committee
The final meeting of the Levin Pipe Band Contest Committee was i herd in • c-he bandroom on Tuesday : night, when a statement of ; accounts was preSented. The total revenue was £317 13s i ld, being made up of gate takings £164 18s, meals at Regent Hall £53 18s, programme adveroising £51 5s, programme saies £14 9s ld, donations £26 13s 6d and catering ana photographic rights £6 10s. Tne three trophies donated, the Keirh Jack Memorial, H.M.V. and ,Granam Wise iMemorial Cups,. are valued at £35 bringing tne efforts of the commit,tee to the grand total of £352 13s ld, while the expenditure amounted to £192 0s lid. The gate receipts were favourably commented upon and members pointed out that the (Levin Borough Council was losing a considerable percentage of takings over tne course of the year, as the fences along the Salisbury Street frontage were in a bad Suate, sevnrai pmsons entering by this means instead of the gates. The president of the committee, Mr. J. R. Macfarlane, pai'd a tri,u.e .o tne way the committee -had worked and made special mention of the large jarmy of workers on the domain, who had not been on ihe committee but had he^ped considerably.. All those organisations who had cdme to the assistance of the Scottish Society to make the contest committee one of the m„st representative in the town were thanked. Mr. Macfarlane paid a tribute to the secretary, Mr. A. L. Dobson, for the efficient manner in wnich he had. carried out his duties, while the ladies' commitcee, under the capable direction of Mrs. J. Perigo, Jhad added further laure'S to tne hospitality of Levin, visiting bandsmen being most generous in their oraise of the excellenu meals supplied to them at a nominal charge. The ladies of the Scottish Society came in for their measure of praise a(so for the staffing of the stalls on the domain. Mr. T. R. Hall, in moving that the committee place on record appreciation of the work of tne president, Mr. Macfarlane, said that not only had he carried out his duties in this position, but he had also assisted in tne work on the domain. Mr. W. R. Jack, in seconding the resolution, said it was ihe duty of the society members to ,:ally round their chief when a job was to be done, and he had set them a good example. ,-g Mr. A. Yorston, . pipe-niaj^r, extended the bands' thanks to the committee and remarked that he had attended several contests, and to carry through so many events in the one day was to_ the credit of ah concerned. He said that Levin would have no difficulty in being allocated a contest in the future.
