February Meeting of Shannon R.S.A.
The February meeting of the Shannon 'branch of the Returned Services' Association was held in the Drui'ds' Hall last Saturday evening. In the . absence of the president, Mr. B!. 'Clayton, the meeting was presided pver by the vice -president, Mr. ^F: O. Burtt. There was an attendance. of 24 members. '■ - . - The acting-secretary,. . Mr. V. J. Bateman, reported on the roll as follows:— Of the total membership of 253, 217 are at present financial. There are 197 Shannon members and 56 belong to the Tokomaru sub-branch. Mr. L. J. Jenkins was transferred into the local branch, from Wellington. Mr, R. S. Downes reported that the entertainnient. committee had arrangemehts tvell in hand for the holding of a social evening at: which the - members of " the Shannon Women's Institpte and. their friends would .beTjfche' guests. Mr. Downes asked for the co-operatlbn of all R.S.A. members in making this function worthy of the excellent work the ladies of the institute had done to assist the R.S.A. Following the general business of the meeting a ntost enjoyable , social hour was spent. This periou took the form of a "Naafi" night when all "diggers" and "kiwis" were brought back into the atmosphere of transit and training camps overseas. The evening was ve'ry popular and all members who attended are anxious that more of these socials be held. Apart frcflm increasing the attendance at meetings and thereby arousing interest in the work the branch are doing for " the returned servicemen, it gives members the chance of get'ting together for an informal chat.
