The Birth Of A Bowling Green
Since its decision to establish a bowling green of its own, the Levin R.S.A. has not wasted time. The section in Salisbury Street, generously donated by Mrs. Walter Lett, has been the scene of considerable activity from which there is gradually emerging the outlines of what will be a first class green. Under the guidance of Mr. C. Foster working on instructions given by Mr. Horton, of Palmerston North — an authority 011 the formation of greens — gangs of boys from the Levin Training Centre and members of the R.S.A. have been busy screening and wheeling the soil on to the site. The initial work of preparing the green was done by contract and consisted of bulldozing the topsoil off the entire area and pushing it on to each edge of the section. From there onwards the work has been executed per medium of the age old method of pick and shovel. To date the soil for the foundation
1 has been sereened and will be levelled and consohdated before the final layer of soil is put on. When it is realised that an average of 300 barrow loads of soil are sereened and carried to the green it can be seen what a grand job of work is being done. The record for an evening's work was reached on Friday when 16 persons shifted 531 barrow loads of soil. Next Saturday work wull begin at 8 a.m. when the curbing for the green will be laid. Now heiA is the catch! All members of the R.S.A. are wanted for this work. Most of the heavier spade work has been done but there is still a job for everyone who can roll along and give a hand.- Even the older members who are perhaps past the age of swinging a shovel can be assured of a task to s'uit their capabilities. The green has to be ready for sowing by the middle of March and this will require co-operation. So if you can come along and help, piease eontact either Mr. W. Meddings, bowling club secretary, or Messrs C. Cooksley or A. Fletcher.
