Council Won't Pay Costs Of Right-of-way
"I for one would not be prepared : to vote for the expenditure of this * sum when only a few persons will be benefiting," said the Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin, when the question of the survey of the pri- - vate road hehind the shops in Oxford Street, from the Post Office to Bath Street, was being discussed at last night's council meeting. | In a letter to the council, thq borough solicitors stated that the cost of a survey of the area would .amount to £68. Previously it was mentioned at a 'council meeting that the estimated legal expenses involving the transfer of the various portions of land making up the whole right-of-way would be £75. It was later ! ascertaine'd that before the sections could be handed over, a survey was necessary and insisted on by the Registrar of Lands. The Mayor said last night that when Messrs. A. W. Allen, Ltd., had cffered the land bought by it to the ! council, the firm had not made any conditions. He considered that the council should gratefully accept the fLrm's offer, but that the other portions of land should be handed over free of cost tq the council before it considered doing any work on it. It was decided that the pouncil would take action along these lineS;
