Levin Branch of Corso Has Useful Year's Work

"The year started with a full realisation of our responsibilities to those - poor folk, and I feel that we can say ihat the result has been quite up to expectations." • ' . "During the year, 2,828 garments, 223 pairs of shoes, 121 packets of seeds, 60 uairs of spectacles, two cartons qf linen and hospital bandages and a spinning wheel have been forwarded for dispatch overseas. "The future activities in China seem rather uncertain and I helieve that for the coming year our efforts are being concentrated on the devastated countries in Eurolie." Continuing, Mrs. Burdekin said that the collection of fat had npt been so satisfactory to date and that only three quarters of a drum had -resulted. However, it was hoped that the committee would do better in the coming year. The street and shop day was to be hel'd a little earlier this year and the date allotted to the committee was March 25. In conclusion, she extended her personal thanks to all -those me"ibers of ladies' guilds and institutes, espscialiy the Poroutawhao and Kimberley organisations, to the girls of the Horowhenua lollege, the deputy chairwoman, Mrs. G. R. Lester, the secretary-treasurer, Mrs. T. C. deMey, and all others who had assisted so loyally during the year, and who had been of such assistance during that time. The Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin, who occupied the chair for the greater part of the meeting, then ■ read the balance sheet for the year, which showe'd totar receipts . amounting to £212 16s 5d and a baTance of £59 19s in the bank. The election of officers resuited as follows; — President: Mrs. H. B. Burdekin; ' vice7presidents: Mesdames G. R. Lest'er and C. S. Keedwell; secretary-treasurer: Mrs. T. C. deMey; auditor: Mr. H. Walker; sewing circle supervisors: Mesdames G. R. Lester, A. V. Morgan 'and T. C. deMey.. It was: decided ■ that the weekly meetings would |begin on Friday.
