TOTALISATOR OFFICES
NOT "BETTING SHOPS" The Royal Commission on Gaming and Racing recently recommended to the Government a ischeme for legalised off-course bet|ting. It envisages the establishment of totalisator offices throughout the country where the investor may place his bet and receive a ticket much as he would his train ticket. In some quarters the question has been raised as to whether these offices would not assume the character of "betting shops," as known in parts of Australia prior to the World War II. The Racing and Trotting Conferences state 'deflnitely that they* would not be associatedi with the Scheme if such a development were possible. i The offices will be properly and decently controlled. They will render no service to the public other than the actual taking of investments on or*. prior to the race day and paying out the dividends in cash or by post at a later date: There will be no inducement for tlie public to congregate. | Ample facilities will be provided for those who wish to bet by tele•phone against cash deposit or winnings. On March 9th you will be asked to vote on this issue and it is earnestly hope'd that you will vote "FOR THE PROPOSAL" and so rid this country of the present system of illegal bookmaking and all its attendant fevils. , [Issued by authority N.Z.
