Search Centred Around Whakatane

AUCKL.AJNH, reo. 4. Efforts to iind the origin of my'steri ous early morning reports resembling those of a lirearm were among thi humdred and ohe duties undertaken b\ the poliee today as part of their in quiries into the murder near Whaka tane last Monday uight of Mr. Johi Kehoe, aged 24, traflhc inspector. The absenee of any known motive for ICehoe's murder is one of the puzzling features of the case. Police activity is still concentrated in and around Whakatane, but late to niglit a most tho rough sifting of all information. had failed to reveal the inurderer's movements or hiding place. Following a report that a man who resemhled the photograph of Riehard ifcGill, who is missing, had spoken to a woman in a Maori settlement at Pan mure, a search of the area by about a dozen police officers was ma.de later ii> the day. When the search had proveu t'ruitless the number of officers was reduced to three. A general lookout for the missing man is being kept by the police in the city and officers afe sta tioned at many important points. A!1 reports that Me.GiJl had been seen are investigated, but many of them are clearly of little value. An earlier report stated that a police party was investigating reports received early this morning that two shots were heard between Edgecumbe, 12 miles from Whalcatane, and Te Telco, four miles from Edgecumbe. The first shot was heard about 12.30 a.m. b^ an Edgecumbe resident, and also by a constable stationed on a bridge, Both consider ed that ,the shot was fired some distance from the township. The second shot was heard about 3 o'clock near Te Teko.
