Vegetables Plentiful
Messrs. Townsend and Paul, Ltd., fruit and produce merchants, Wellington, report that during the past week apricots, nectarines, currants, raspberrie's, and peaches have been in keen enquiry, with values proving most attractive. Plums, on the other hand, have been slow to quit. Tomatoes over the last few days have taken a sharp rise. Most vegetables have been in heavy supply and peas are firm at good prices. Quotations are: — Vegetables! Beans, butter, 4d to 8d; broad, 2d; runners, 3d to 6d; stringless, 6d to ls; peas, 4d to 7d, all per lb.; beetroot, 8s to 12s; cucumbers, 25s to 30s; lettuce, 2s to 6S; marrows, 2s to 5s; parsnips, 30s to 35s; rhubarb, 2s 6d to 8s: silver beet, ls 6d to 2s 6d;
spinach, 2s 6d to 5s all per case; cabbage, ls 6d to 3s case or 2s 6d to 3s 6d' per sack; caulifLowers, 5s to 15s; pumpkins, 20s to 28s sacks; cucumbers, 5s to 7s per box; onions, 15s cw|t.; potatoes, 14s to 17s ewt.; Chinese cabbage, 4d to 8d; radish, 3-d to 6d; mint, Od per bunch; sweet corn, 14s bag. Fruit: Peaches, trays, 4s to 8s 6d; halves, 8s to 17s; plums, dessert, 5s to 8s; others, 2s to 4s; nectarines, 10s to 16s; apricots, 12s to 27s; black currants, 21s to 25s half case; cherries, 12s to 27s box; raspberries, 2s to 2s 3d; tomatoes, red, ls to ls 7d; coloured, 8£d to ls ld per lb. Flowers: Gladioli, 2s to 6s per dozen ; carnations, 6s 6d to 12s per gross. Poultry: White Leghorn hens, best, 5s 6d to 8s; others, 4s 6d to 5s; Black Orpington hens, best, 12s 6d to 14s; others, 9s 6d. to 10s-; cockerels, 2s to 2s 3d lb. live weight; white ducks, young, 14s 6d to 18s; old, 8s 6d to 10s; coloured, young, 10s 6d to 12s 6d; old, 5S 6'd to 8s; geese, 8s to 10s; turkeys, 2s- 2d to 2s 3d lb. live 'weight.
