Calf Day At Shannon School

A record number of entries, fine weather, some 150 interested parents and farmers, an'd the school's recently installed loudspeaker system combined to make calf day at the Shannon Schooi a most successful function. EmjTere'd in the competition were 42 weaner calves, 10 yearlings, four two-year-olds and over, 44 fat lambs and 10 lambs in the care and attention- class. This record entry necessitated an early start and pending the arrival of Mr. A. M. Atkins, of Manakau, .the offlcial judge, Mr. J-. Horn, of Kuku, deputised for him in judging the yearling class. Associate judges were Mr. P. McErlean, Moutoa,' and Mr. Nicholson,' of Levin. • Mr. G. Mitchell judged the care and attention .class for lambs and Mr. F. Powell the fat lamb competition. At .the conclusion of the judging, the results of which have already been published, Mr. A. E. Jeffrey, chairmhn of the Schooi Committee, in thanking all responsible for the successful day, mentioned the donors of cups and trophies and expresse'd his pleasure at seeing such a large attendance. ' "I have enjoyed being here," said Mr. Atkins while congratulating the competitors on the evidenee of excellent care and attention. Mr. W. Barnett, agricultural instructor, also said that he was pleased to be present. He congratulated the competitors and pointed out that all could not be first. AS 1949 would be the 21st anniversary of the Boys' and Girls' Agricultural Club movement Inception, he called for the cooperation of parents in making itj a bumper year. Qne of the highlights of the day was the playing over the loudspeaker system of a recording of the schooi choir taken at the time of the recent festival. Arrangements for the very acceptable afternoon tea were in the hands of Mrs. F. O. Burtt, wife of the headmaster, ladies of the Schooi Committee and committeenien's wiveS, and Mr. Lind, presi'dent of the Parents' and Teachers' Assoeiation. Girls in the school's branch of the Junior Red Cross took advantage of the day to conduet a stall, the saies from which produced £8 for overseas. relief.
