Double Fatality On H.M.S. Bellona
OAMARU, Dec. 1. . One rating was killed instantly and another died latev as the result oJ injuries received in an accident about 7 o'clock this morning on H.M.N.Z.K Bellona which was anchored in the roadstead entrance to Oamaru Harbour. Those dead are: jMALCOLM JAMES O'BRIEN, aged about 20; next of kin, Mrs. M. C. O'Brien (mother), 93 Cowper Street, Greymouth. JOHX- STANLE'Y HAYWARD, aged about 1S; next of kin, Mrs. A. E. Hay-wa-rd (mother), 37 Church Street, Addington. « The accident happenCd when the ship's motor cutter was being lowered by 1.2 ratings on the port side, to bring men ashore. There was a heavy swell at the time and when the clutches* were knocked away, the cutter began. to swing fore and aft. When it swung into the ship, Hayward and O 'Brien were caught between it and the bulkhead at the rear. Both received severe head injuries.
