Obituary

MRS. CATHERINE KING K With the passing of Mrs. Catherine King at her residence, Stout Street, on the morning of October 16, Shannon lost one of its pioneer settlers. ; , Mrs. King, who was well-known and respected in the district, was born in Poland 83 years ago and came to New Zealand at the age of three years with her . parents, landing at Dunedin in. the !year 1868. The family settled in 'Gore and it was there that Mrs. "King met and married her husband, M-r. Thomas King. Mr. and Mrs. King and their family came to the North Island in 1899 and settled in Shannon seven years later, residing there ever since. The deceased lady was of hardworking, pioneer stock and until a few years ago she always kept and miiked two or three cows. Her gardening activities were well known to all citizens of Shannon. She was one of the first residents to cultivate a lawn on the roadside in front of her property. Her flower garden was the admiration of all and was one of the bright spots in Stout Street. Her love for flowers was so great that she was working in her garden within a few weeks of her death. Left to mourn 'her passing is a family of four sons, Messrs. Thomas (Shannon) , Frances (Patea), Jack (Wellington) and Jim (Palmerston North), and three daughters, Mrs. Roberts (Shannon), 'Mrs. Smith (Wanganui) and Mrs. Haliburton (Hunterville) . Her husband passed away in 1938. Requiem Mass was celebrated in St. Joseph's Church, Shannon, and the funeral left for the Shannon Cemetery. Requiem Mass and the service at the graveside were conducted by Father Foley. The pall-bearers were her four sons and two sons-in-law, Messrs. Smith and Haliburton. The many messages of sympathy and the beautiful fioral tributes bore tribute to the very high esteem in which the late Mrs. King was 'held in this district.
