Bowling Season Opens

In glorious sunshine, the Shannon Bowling and t , Croquet ,»Ciiib opened , the 1948 season on Sa'turday afternoon, when there was a large gathering of members Yan'd visitors. * ' In declaring the greens officially open for play, the president,. Mr. H. L. Norris, paid tribute t tod the many members of all sections of the club who had put in such work in getting the greens and surroundings in such good drder. In extending a welcome to the visitors the president made special mention of Mr. Todd,, of Newmarket, Auckland, who had been a member of the local club some 18 years ago. Mr. Norris said that it was always a pleasure to have past members visiting the green again, and he expressed the pleasure of all members at the number of representatives of surrounding clubs present at the opening. After wishing all members, visitors and| newcomers to the club a happy day on both the bowling and croquet greens, the president called upon Mrs. J. T. Bovis, president of the croquet section, to throw up the first "kitty" and Mr. H. W. Knowles, the oldest member of .the club, to put up the first bowl. Mrs. Norris was then called on to run the first hoop on the cro-. quet green and the season was ^eclared open.

■ Trophies were awarded as follows; — Hurry-scurry: Mrs. M. Parr and Sister McDonald; golf putting: Mrs. H. Norris; hoops: Mrs. F. Denton; hitting the peg: Mrs. E. Thorne. The bowlers played friendly games with the visiting rinks, which included Norhtern, Palmerston North, Takaro, Hokowhich included Northern, PalA telegram expressing good wishes was received from the Terrace End Club. The president announced during the afternoon that the club had been pleased to make Mr. W. H. Knowles a life member. '
