Z. Gray Runner-up In Open Golf Championship
Playing his characteristic steady golf E. J. Astin (Manawaru) beat Z. Gray (Otaki), at the 19th to claim the Manawatu Golf Club's open championship in the annual 'tournament at 'Hokowhitu. Tne match was a dramatic one, whitu to-day in squally weather. i The match was a dramatic one, Astin being four up at the turn. They were all square as they left the 17th. The 18th was halved and Astin sunk at eight foot .putt at the 19th to take the hole, match and the championship. Gray, a left-hander, played spectacular golf throughout and though often wide with long shots, made many remarkable recoveries. He played exceptionally well in the semi-final against K. S. j Glendinning in the morning and !on several occasions outdrove his opponent from the tees. The ivalue of these shots can be recognise'd by the fact that Glendinning is noted as one of the Dominion's, most powerful hitters.
