U.S. Aid Near To War Scale Seen As Only Way
CowrioW
Received Wednesday, 9.55 a.mSHANGHAI, Nov. 2. Immediate American military and economie aid on a scale "just short of war" against the Chinese Communists is seen here as the only means of preventing a total Nationalist coilapse before the New Year. A highly placed American source said today that all-out aid "without any further hesjtation" was essential since Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek's regime, no matter what shortcomings it may have, is still the only effective bulwark against Communism in China. Any advance of Communism in China automatically sets back the prorgramme of containing Communism to Europe. There will be little hope of stemming the Red flood over the rest of Asia once China is lost. Informed pro - Government sources said that there is little likelihood of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek abandoning the National leadership at the moment, despite the Manchurian debacle. They believed, however, that he will decide on either the resignation of the Government or its removal to South China for continued resistance if and when Suchow falls. According to the latest reports, the Communists are massing 600,000 men for an offensive against this main Government bastion in Central China. In opposition, the Nationalists are said to have concentrated an equally formidable force.
