Former Shannon Teacher Goes To America
Mrs. J. Bamett, of Eagle's Road, has received word that Miss "E. M. Borthwick, now Mrs. J. F. Gabites, has left with her husband for the United States of America. . . Miss Borthwick was a teacher at the Shannon School for two years and was well-known among the tawn's younger set. . After . leaving Shannon she was appointed arts and crafts mistress at the Feilding Agricultural High School, a position which she held for two years. She later returned to . Wellington to become arts &nd crafts specialist in the Hutt Valley area of the Wellington Education Board. Her duties involved travelling round somd fifteen schools from Upper Hutt to Eastbourne, teaching and givihg instruction to teachers in arts and crafts. Miss Borthwick was then transferred to the Education Department as assistant area organiser in arts and crafts, and her duties were considerably expanded 'to include schools throughout the Wellington district and Marlborough. She . also travelled to Auckland, Hamilton and the South Island to assist at teachers' refresher courses. ' She was the Wellington area organiser before resigning to be married. Her husband, Mr. J. F. Gabites, is a senior ofiicer of the Meteorological Office at Wellington and a science graduate of Canterbury and Victoria University Collegesi During the war he spent considerable time in the Pacific area and he was a member of the Victory contingent to visit England. He is at present travelling to • take up a British Coiflmonwealth Fund Fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston, U.S.A.
