Plane May Have Exceeded Speed Of Sound

Received Friday, 11 a.m. LONDON, Sept. 9, The Supply Mimster announced that a De Haviiland 108 research plane, piloted by John Derry, is believed to have exceeded the speed of sound— about 720 miles hourly- — in a recent high speed develoxnnent trial. The De Haviiland 108 is a small tailless plane with one centrai jet engine and looks iike a bat. It was built specially for research into the problems of the De Haviiland "flying wing," which is a -fortyseater jet liner being constructed in the utmost seerecy. Captain Geoffrey De Haviiland was killed in 1946 while flying over 600 miles hourly in a De Haviiland 108.
