CHRISTCHURCH, Sppt. 3; An elderly man living alone was burned to death at his home in Linwood *early this morning. He was Ernest Arthur -Alander, aged .70, a -peri-" sioner and widower of 9 Barbour >Street. Three men attempted to reseue Air. Mander when the house suddenly became a mass of flames just after tliree o'clock, but loeked doors jirevented tliem from gaining entry. On tlie arrival of two engiues from tlie Central Fire Station tLrenien liroke into # Mr. ' Mander 's bedroom but he was already dead. Arr.
