Must Be Ready For Any Possibility Of War
Received Friday, 8.50 p.m. LONDON, Sept. 3. The Secretary of State for War (Mr. Shinwell) has issued a broadcast appeal for 100,000 more volunteers for the Terrvtorial Army. Mr. Shinwell said the postwar reduetion in the strength of the army was hased npon the assuniption that the world would remain peaceful, htit the possibility of trouble breaking out was more likely today than it appeared to be 12 or 18 months ago. "Whatever ' otu- wishes may he," said Mr. Shinwell, "we must face the facts. We must he ready for emergencies, though at the same time we sincerely hope no ehiergency will^arise." Releases and discharges from the armed , f orces during July totalled -15,010, 'bringing the total nuniber ol' t uei and women reieased since dune 18, 1915, to .5,358,670. " All the R.A.F. operational commands in England, the Royal Auxiliary Air Force and Anierican Superfortresses will operate with Army antiaircraft in the largest air exercises since the war.
