Fruitless. Effort To Settle Coal Strike
AUCKLAND, August 18. The doqdlock in. the Huntly mines dispute eontipued today. The Alaedonald, Glen Afton and Pukemiro mines remained idle and indieatioris are thpt they will not be vvorked again tomorrow. Kyes are turned on Wellington for the next move followipg an annou.ncement by the superintendent of the Waikato controlled mines, Mr. J. t-Ughes, that all ways of reaihing a settlemept had been tried and had failed. Hopes are held in some quarters that a solution may be found by invoking the compulsory provisions of the Industrial Conciliation and Afbitration Amendment Act. It is alleged that a seeret ballot was unSuccesgfully sought at today 's meeting of Macdonald miners, Although it is reported that the majority of Macdonald miners in favour of continuing the strike is decreasing there is still no indieation of a general reversal of attitude. The loss of coal output as a result ot the strike has now reached nearly 8000 tons with the loss in wages about the same fighre. The Glen Afton and Pukemiro mines liave been idle for a week and the Macdonald mine t'or oue day longer. There has been iittlo financial hardship felt as yet as the miners are paid a week behind their earnings.
