Australian Soccer Team Beats Canterbury
CHRISTCHURCH, August 18. The Australian soccer team beat Canlerbury by 3 goals to T bel'ore a moderate erowd at Lancaster Para today. The deciding factors were the Australians ' speed and ball control and the prodigious clearing lcicks of the full baclcs. Cauterbury fared better than expected and the Australians had to work' hard all the timo. Canterbnry 's defence was sound and hard working and Laing, in goal, made some ainazing saves. There was no score at half-time. In the second spell Parsons scored for Australia and tlieu .Tohns scored twice, Australia then led — 0. Cauterbury fouglit back and McAnultv scored. In the lir.st lialf, v.diile attempting to elear, M. Gordon, Canterburv captain. broke a leg and was carried off. Gordon has plavcd over ,10 niatches for Canterbnry and this was to5 be his last.. Gordon is vice-captain of the New Zealand team and his abseuce will be felt. in the remainuig tests.
